The Global Innovation Index (GII) 2024 map visually captures the innovation ecosystem performance of 133 economies using 78 unique indicators.
The spectrum of innovation, ranging from less innovative (shades of blue) to more innovative (shades of green and yellow), showcases global disparities in innovation capacities. Switzerland, the U.S., and Sweden emerge as global leaders in innovation, dominating in the high-income category. In North America, the U.S. stands strong with a score of 62.4, while Switzerland in Europe tops the global ranking with a score of 67.5.
Among the upper middle-income nations, China (61.2), Malaysia (38.7), and Türkiye (39.0) lead their group. India's position as the most innovative lower-middle-income country at 38.1 is noteworthy, followed by Vietnam (37.0) and the Philippines (31.1). Africa sees South Africa as the top innovator in the Sub-Saharan region, while Brazil leads in Latin America.
Focusing on the low-income group, Rwanda, Togo, and Uganda take the top spots. Uganda’s representation in this group highlights its potential for growth in innovation despite economic constraints. Although Uganda ranks behind Rwanda and Togo, its inclusion signals an upward trajectory, emphasizing efforts in fostering innovation amid resource limitations. This could represent new opportunities in sectors such as technology and agriculture, sectors that could be pivotal for Uganda’s future development.
